I’ve been spending a lot of time in silence lately, letting nothingness wash over me.

Not thinking, not doing, just sitting in stillness and silence. I meditate as well, but that’s a conscious action with a desired outcome of connection with All That Is; Not at all what I’m talking about.

I also spend a lot of time listening to what others have to say about what’s going on in the world / galaxy / universe and in this glorious silence I have gleamed one single truth that remains constant in every iteration of reality, and that is the following:

The goal of each of our lives – and of society itself – is to comprehend that we are all connected to each other, and realize that if one person is suffering, then we are all suffering. The goal is to awaken to our interconnectedness to each other, and to the Universe itself.

And further, every choice we make determines whether we grow closer, or further away, from that interconnectedness.

This awareness requires a very significant breakdown of societal norms, and therein lies the problem: people are programmed for separation starting from a very early age. Boy vs. Girl, Black vs. White, Christian vs. Muslim, Young vs. Old, Healthy vs. Sick, Gay vs. Straight, and on and on and on.

Our tribal past teaches us to stay close to “our own” and stay away from “the others” but the truth is, when we connect with Others, we learn and grow faster, and end up leading higher quality lives. The other truth is, we are a long, long way from being tribal; we live in a full-fledged global society.

The question becomes…. what is required to open the floodgates of Unity awareness? What kind of experience is necessary to yank people out of the lull of separation?

And ultimately, why has society programmed us for separation in the first place?

I don’t have the answers, but knowing the questions is a vital first step.
